Designing a great driveway
The driveway is pure infrastructure, but it occupies up to a third of your front view - so it deserves design attention. Material choice drives everything: gravel is cheap and permeable but migrates, asphalt is economical and flexible but needs sealing, concrete is durable and bright but cracks if the base is poor, and pavers cost the most while outlasting them all and repairing piece by piece.
Two invisible decisions determine whether any material lasts: the base and the water. A compacted gravel sub-base of 10-20 cm carries the load, and a slope of at least 2 percent away from the garage keeps water off foundations and ice off the surface. Edging, a border course of pavers and low planting along the sides turn a utilitarian strip into an approach.
