Art Deco interior design: the style guide
Glamorous 1920s geometry with brass, lacquer and sunburst motifs
Art Deco interior design is a glamorous style from the 1920s and 1930s built on bold geometry, symmetry and rich materials. It pairs lacquered wood, polished brass and chrome, marble, velvet and mirrored glass with sunburst, chevron and stepped motifs. Rooms feel luxurious, dramatic and carefully ordered rather than relaxed.

What defines Art Deco design?
Art Deco took its name from the 1925 Paris Exposition Internationale des Arts Decoratifs and defined the look of the interwar years, from ocean liners to the Chrysler Building. It celebrated modernity and machine-age precision, but always dressed in expensive materials. Symmetry is fundamental: furniture is arranged in balanced pairs, and patterns repeat with mathematical discipline.
The style's signature vocabulary is geometric. Sunbursts, zigzags, chevrons, fans and stepped forms appear on mirrors, screens, inlaid furniture and lighting. Surfaces are glossy and hard: black lacquer, polished marble, chrome, mirrored glass and exotic veneers like macassar ebony and zebrawood, usually trimmed with brass or gold leaf.
Color in Art Deco is deep and confident rather than pastel. Emerald green, burgundy, midnight blue and glossy black are set against ivory and metallics. The result is a room that feels theatrical and formal, closer to a grand hotel lobby than a casual living space.

Mistakes to avoid
- Mixing Art Deco with Art Nouveau, whose flowing organic curves contradict Deco's crisp geometry.
- Using too many competing patterns, when the style relies on one or two strong repeated motifs.
- Choosing brushed nickel or matte metals instead of the polished brass and chrome the style demands.
- Skipping symmetry; random, asymmetrical arrangements lose the formal order that defines Deco rooms.
- Going small with accessories, since Deco rooms need a few bold statement pieces rather than delicate trinkets.
Art Deco on a budget
- Add a sunburst mirror and geometric cushions first; they deliver the Deco look for the least money.
- Spray-paint existing hardware and lamp bases in a brass finish instead of buying new fixtures.
- Look for second-hand lacquered furniture and re-gloss it rather than paying for new veneer pieces.
- Use peel-and-stick geometric wallpaper on one accent wall instead of papering the whole room.
- Swap a plain rug for a bold chevron or fan pattern to anchor the room at low cost.

Art Deco FAQ
What is the difference between Art Deco and Art Nouveau?
Art Nouveau uses flowing, organic lines inspired by plants and flowers, while Art Deco is geometric, symmetrical and machine-inspired. Nouveau favors stained glass and carved wood; Deco favors lacquer, chrome, mirror and brass.
What colors are typical for Art Deco interiors?
Art Deco palettes are rich and high-contrast: glossy black, deep emerald, burgundy and navy set against ivory, with brass, gold and chrome accents. The metallics are as important as the colors themselves.
Can Art Deco work in a small apartment?
Yes, if you edit. Use one statement piece like a sunburst mirror or velvet chair, keep walls ivory or deep green, and repeat a single geometric motif. Mirrors and glossy surfaces also help small rooms feel larger.
