How to virtually paint your house exterior for free

By RivAI Team · · 9 min read

The short answer

To virtually paint your house exterior for free, take a straight-on photo of the whole front in overcast light, upload it to Sherwin-Williams' ColorSnap web visualizer or a phone app, and test body, trim and door colors. Then paint sample boards, check them outside morning to evening, and only buy gallons once the real samples agree.

How do you virtually paint your house exterior for free?

You need one good photo and a free visualizer. Shoot the front of the house straight on, on an overcast day or with the facade in open shade, with the whole wall in frame and no cars in the driveway. Then load it into an exterior paint color visualizer: the Sherwin-Williams ColorSnap Visualizer for Web lets you upload your own photo and paint it with a brush or drag-and-drop, and Benjamin Moore's free Color Portfolio app has photo and video visualizers.

Test the body, trim, front door and shutters together as one scheme, and keep it to three schemes at most. A screen can only narrow the list. Before you buy gallons, paint samples onto white foam boards and watch them outside through a full day, as Benjamin Moore recommends, because sun, shade and your roof all shift the color. Budget for the real job too: This Old House puts a professional repaint at $4,400 to $8,800 for a 2,000 sq ft home.

How should you photograph your house for a paint visualizer?

The photo decides how believable the preview looks. Every visualizer, free or paid, works from the pixels you give it, so flat light and a square-on view matter more than which app you pick. If you're planning more than paint (lights, a porch, planting), our exterior home makeover guide covers the bigger list.

  • Shoot on an overcast day, or when the front of the house sits in open shade. Direct sun blows out light colors and throws hard shadows that a visualizer reads as darker paint.
  • Stand straight across from the facade, usually from the far sidewalk or across the street.
  • Fit the whole thing: roofline, both corners, front steps and a strip of lawn.
  • Hold the phone level at chest height so the walls stay vertical, and use the main 1x lens instead of the ultra-wide, which bends the edges.
  • Move cars, trash bins and hoses out of frame. Anything parked in front of the siding is something the tool has to paint around, and it rarely gets those edges right.
  • Take four or five shots and keep the sharpest one.

Keep the original file. The same photo works later for an AI exterior redesign if you decide you want ideas for the whole facade and its landscaping.

Which free exterior paint color visualizers can you use?

Three free options cover most people. The paint brands' tools tie you to their own color names, while a general house paint color visualizer takes any color you can describe with a hex code.

Treat any of them as a sorting tool. Use it to cut ten candidates down to two or three, then let physical samples make the final call.

How do you test exterior paint colors step by step?

  1. Note the colors you can't change. Roof shingles, brick, stone, window frames and the driveway stay put, so name their undertone (warm brown, cool gray, green) before you look at a single chip.
  2. Pick three full schemes. Each one names a body, trim, door and shutter color. The table in the next section gives you three starter combinations with hex codes.
  3. Run each scheme on the same photo. Paint the body first, then the trim, then the door, and screenshot every finished scheme so you can flip between all 3.
  4. Cut to two. View the screenshots at thumbnail size. A scheme that still reads well that small will read well from the street.
  5. Order 8 oz samples of the finalists and roll two coats onto white foam boards, following Benjamin Moore's sample advice. Boards around 2 x 2 ft (60 x 60 cm) are a practical size; Benjamin Moore says to keep samples off the siding itself.
  6. Check the boards three times in one day: morning, around noon and late afternoon. Hold them on the sunny side and the shady side, right next to the roof or brick.
  7. Judge from the street. Prop the boards against the house and walk back at least 30 ft (9 m), roughly where a visitor first sees the house.
  8. Buy the winner and paint the door last. A door takes a quart and an afternoon, so it's the cheapest place to take a risk.

Which exterior color combinations should you test first?

These three schemes use Sherwin-Williams colors because the brand publishes a hex code on each color page: Pure White SW 7005, Tricorn Black SW 6258 and Universal Khaki SW 6150, a warm 2026 trend pick. Black on the door has some backing beyond taste. In a 2022 Zillow buyer survey, black and slate blue front doors came out on top, with hypothetical offers as much as $6,449 higher. Those are opinions from a survey, not sale prices, so use them as a tiebreaker.

Starting from one color you already love works too. A color palette generator will suggest matching trim and accent shades you can then test the same way.

How does light reflectance change how exterior colors look?

Light reflectance value (LRV) measures how much light a color bounces back, from 0 for black to 100 for pure white. On the three colors above, Pure White sits at 83.957, Universal Khaki at 40.478 and Tricorn Black at 2.849. That spread is why one house can look bright, settled or almost silhouetted.

Sunlight pushes every color lighter. A white that looks soft on a chip can glare on a south- or west-facing wall, so a good rule of thumb is to keep the brightest whites, like Benjamin Moore's Chantilly Lace at LRV 90.04, for trim and pick something a step softer for the body.

Darks go the other way and read nearly black in shade. Black Beauty has an LRV of 5.32, and Benjamin Moore's 2026 Color of the Year, Silhouette AF-655, sits at 10.18. Benjamin Moore doesn't publish hex codes, so match those by eye in a visualizer and trust the foam board over the screen.

Check your siding before you go dark. Sherwin-Williams warns that dark paint absorbs heat and can warp or buckle vinyl siding; it points you to its VinylSafe colors or a shade no darker than the original siding, and rules out oil-based coatings on vinyl.

How much does it cost to paint the exterior of a 2,000 sq ft house?

This Old House puts professional exterior painting at $2.20 to $4.40 per square foot, which comes to $4,400 to $8,800 for a 2,000 sq ft home, or about $6,600 on average. Expect the top of that range when there's a lot of scraping, tall walls, or several trim colors.

Doing it yourself swaps labor for time, ladders and a long weekend or three. A paint sprayer rental runs about $50 to $100 a day by This Old House's estimate, and you'll still need a brush or roller for trim and edges. Sample boards cost little next to either number, and they're the cheapest insurance in the whole project.

How can you preview paint colors on your own house first?

The RivAI paint color visualizer works on a photo of your actual house. Open the Paint tool, add your facade photo and pick a surface: siding, trim and doors are three of its six paintable surfaces. Choose one of the 12 swatches, or open the iOS color picker and type the hex code from the color page, like #B8A992 for Universal Khaki. A Standard result takes about 30 seconds.

To build a full scheme, paint the siding first, then edit the finished result with Paint again for the trim and the door. The before/after slider compares each version with your original photo, and you can save every version to Photos to line them up side by side.

For whole-look ideas beyond paint, the Exterior redesign tool with the House Exterior room type restyles the facade in a style you choose, and Keep Structure holds your walls, windows and layout. Our modern house exterior ideas show the kind of result to aim for.

Know the limits. You get 2 free designs per install, free results carry a watermark, and the app runs only on iPhone and iPad. It doesn't match brand names, and no screen shows real paint exactly, so the foam boards still get the final vote.

FAQ

How do I paint the outside of my house?

Wait for a dry stretch, wash the siding and let it dry, scrape loose paint and spot-prime bare wood. Caulk gaps around trim, then work top to bottom: body first, trim second, door last. Two coats is a sound default. Read the can for the temperature range and recoat time before you start.

Is it better to roll or spray exterior house paint?

Spraying is faster on big, plain walls and rough siding, though it needs careful masking of windows, roofs and cars, plus a calm day. Rolling and brushing are slower, easier to control and waste less paint. A common split is to spray the body and brush the trim. If you've never used a sprayer, practice on a fence or shed first.

Can I brush paint samples straight onto my siding?

Benjamin Moore advises against it, since its small sample pots are meant for interior use. Paint white foam boards instead, two coats each, and move them around the house through the day. Boards also let you compare two finalists side by side and take them back inside when you're done.

Why does paint look different on my house than in the visualizer?

Screens give off light while siding reflects it, and every phone shows color a little differently. A visualizer also has to guess at shadows and texture from your photo. Use the preview to compare schemes against each other, then trust physical samples in daylight for the exact shade.
